Doi Luang Chiang Dao is the third highest mountain in Thailand, with its peak measuring 2,225 m. The base of the mountain begins at 300 meters above sea level, with the hiking trail beginning at 1,500m. For those doing the hiking tour, the transport car will take you from the base of the mountain, and will drive about 30km up the mountain to the checkpoint (approximately 1.30 hours), where the beginning of the trail begins. The hike itself is 8.5km up the mountain, and another 8.5km down the mountain (about 3.5 hours each way).

Important Access Rules November 2018 – February 2019:

For the safety of wildlife and visitors, the mountain is only open for hiking between November 2018 and February 2019. Due to wildlife sanctuary rules Wednesdays are unavailable for hiking and the mountain has a limit of 150 people for overnight camping. Hiking up the mountain is only permitted with a local guide for the safety and security of wildlife. Doi Luang Chiang Dao has two trails to hike up the mountain which alternate as the available guided trekking trail. This season the open trail is the Khun Huy Mae Kok.
